Kuznetsova moves into semis
Svetlana Kuznetsova upset second seed Eugenie Bouchard in straight sets to reach her first semi-final of the year at the WTA Portugal Open.
The Russian had trailed 4-1 at one stage in the opening set but won 11 of the last 12 games to go one step further than she managed at the same event last season.
The seventh seed had not previously made it to the last four of a tournament since Moscow last year, when she was beaten by Samantha Stosur.
However the two-time Grand Slam winner has shown some good form of late on clay, including making the quarter-finals in Stuttgart last week.
"I was able to play my game and everything worked out well for me," said Kuznetsova.
"It's nice to be back in the semis. My clay season is certainly starting better than my hardcourt."
Her reward for beating Bouchard, who she had actually enjoyed a practice session with earlier in the week, is a clash with compatriot Elena Vesnina. The eighth seed knocked out Italian fourth seed Roberta Vinci 7-6 (7/5) 4-6 7-5.
Top seed Carla Suarez Navarro eased past Polona Hercog, triumphing 6-1 6-3 against the unseeded Slovenian.
The Spaniard will next take on Irina Begu, the Romanian having seen off Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland 6-3 7-6 (8/6).
