Kvitova wins New Haven title

Reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova completed the perfect build-up for the US Open by winning the Connecticut Open title in New Haven.

The Czech defeated Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova 6-4 6-2 to win the title for the second time in three years.

Kvitova, who lost to Simona Halep in last year's final, will be seeded three when the year's last Grand Slam tournament begins in New York on Monday.

"It was great to win the title. I'm very happy to play the final like that," Kvitova said. "Hopefully I can show that at the US Open."

Rybarikova, ranked 68th, knocked out top-seeded Halep on Tuesday but could not claim her fifth WTA title.

It was a 13th WTA title for Kvitova and second of the year after her Wimbledon victory.Kvitova lost just 18 games in the entire tournament, while in the final she hit 31 winners to only six from Rybarikova."I needed some matches before the US Open so I'm very proud of getting through like that," Kvitova said. "I'll enjoy today but from tomorrow I will focus on the US Open."
