Lam to take Connacht role

Pat Lam has been confirmed as the new coach of Connacht, taking over from Eric Elwood.

The former Samoa coach has signed a three-year deal and will replace Elwood as head coach of the Irish Province this summer.

Lam was dismissed by the Blues after a poor 2012 Super Rugby campaign following four years at the helm of the New Zealand franchise.

The former back-rower was part of Samoa's coaching team as they defeated Wales and Canada, as well as suffering a narrow loss to France, during the November internationals last year.

Connacht chief executive Tom Sears said: "The appointment of our next coach is a huge decision for Connacht Rugby and at the end of an extensive process we are delighted to be able to appoint Pat Lam.

"The position attracted worldwide interest enabling us to select from an incredibly strong field and we are convinced Pat has all the qualities and credentials to take Connacht forward."

Lam added: "My family and I are truly blessed to have another opportunity to be part of a new community and country and we are looking forward to the exciting challenge ahead at Connacht.

"I'm looking forward to working with good people to build on the great work that Eric has done."
