Lambert: Defeat not deserved

Paul Lambert felt a 1-0 loss to Newcastle United was harsh on his Aston Villa side following Loic Remy's late goal at St James' Park.

Newcastle had the better of the second half but it looked like the game would end in stalemate until Remy pounced in stoppage time.

Villa had enjoyed a decent spell in the first half and Lambert was left to rue his side's missed chances after coming away without a point.

He told Sky Sports: "I don't think we deserved to lose it. I think, especially in the first half, we created chance after chance and looked really threatening.

"In the second half I didn't think anybody was going to score, albeit Newcastle had a bit of pressure, but it was a defensive error that got punished.

"I thought a draw was probably fair.

"It was a defensive error that hurt us and we should have taken our chances in the first half."

Lambert admitted that he could still draw some positives from Villa's performance as they go on to the rest of the season.

He explained: "We can take a lot from the way we played and if we can keep playing like that we will win more than not.

"There are a lot of games still to play and we just have to try and win the next one."
