Lambert hails Villa character

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert hailed his side's character as they came from two goals down to beat West Brom 4-3 in a thrilling West Midlands derby clash at Villa Park.

Christian Benteke's second-half penalty proved to be the difference for Villa to secure only Villa's third home league win of the season.

A superb Chris Brunt strike and a Fabian Delph own goal inside the first nine minutes got West Brom off to a flyer at Villa Park but the hosts replied quickly through Andreas Weimann, Leandro Bacuna and Delph.

Youssouf Mulumbu made it 3-3 at half-time before Benteke grabbed the winner and Lambert was full of praise for the battling qualities of his side.

"As I said to you before the game a derby game it doesn't matter where you are sitting in the table it can be so unpredicatable it happened again tonight.

"I don't think I've been involved in a derby game where it's been pretty quiet there are always things happening.

"To go down 2-0 so early on in a derby and to turn it around is extraordinary, an extraordinary effort."

Asked if he ever doubted his side's character, Lambert added: "Never doubted that.

"They are young lads but they have done brilliant since the turn of the year and we had a great performance against Liverpool and today I thought we were terrific.

"2-0 down was a right bolt from the blue that and then we get right back into it, then we go in the lead and we lose it at half-time again 3-3 and then Christian does great for the penalty."

Lambert had words of praise for Benteke, feeling he is now getting back to his best form after scoring his third goal in three games with the winner against West Brom.

"I think the goals have done that to him," Lambert said of Benteke's return to form. "I think the goal against Arsenal and obviously Liverpool and then tonight again and when he is like that like I've said before sometimes he is unplayable when he's like that and if he can keep that.

"He done the exact same last year, it's a strange thing he went on this goalscoring run of goal after goal but his general game tonight i thought was excellent."
