Lampard's Euro experience key

Frank Lampard has been brought in by Manchester City to add some much needed top-level Champions League experience, according to former City winger Trevor Sinclair.

The England international's move to City on-loan from MLS side New York City has been questioned in some quarters with many expecting the former Chelsea man's first-team chances to be limited.

But Sinclair says Lampard has not joined City to sit on the bench, insisting the 36-year-old would only have moved if he knew he would get the opportunity to play.

\"I don't think Frank Lampard would sign for Manchester City if he wasn't going to play,\" Sinclair told The Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ.

\"He's played the most minutes ever in the Premier League, even more than Ryan Giggs. So he's not going to go there to sit on the bench, he wants to play football.

\"The way I look at it he's been brought in to give them a little bit more experience in the Champions League. Although City did better last season, they've not quite got to the latter stages of that competition which is what they want to do and I think that will be one of the main goals for Manchester City this year.

\"That's where Frank Lampard's experience and coolness and being in those situations before for Chelsea for many years, comes in. I think that is where his experience will be vital.\"

City completed the big-money signing of Porto's towering defender Eliaquim Mangala on Monday and Sinclair is backing the France international to be a success in Manchester.

\"Mangala has broken the record of money paid for a defender,\" he said. \"He's a big strong player.

\"I think we always looked at Kompany at the heart of that defence and he's never really had a settled partner.

\"Nastasic went in there and did a decent job, De Michelis went in there and did very well at the end of the season and was probably one of the reasons why City got over the line and ended up winning it (the Premier League).

\"But bringing in a world class defender to go along with the skipper - it's absolutely what Manchester City needed and whichever goalkeeper plays for Man City, they'll be very pleased to have those two big guys in front of them.\"
