Late strikes boost Sussex

Somerset lost two late wickets to end a shortened day one of their LV= County Championship Division One clash with Sussex on the back foot.

Rain prevented any play during the morning, and the visitors made steady if slow progress when they finally did get going, closing on 83 for three at Hove.

Somerset made a terrible start when England paceman Chris Jordan had Chris Jones caught behind in the second over without a run having been scored.

Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton dug in and frustrated Sussex with a 78-run partnership, but that was ended with less than three overs left in the day.

Steve Magoffin gave wicketkeeper Ben Brown a second catch as he snared Compton for 41, while Jordan claimed a second wicket in the next over as nightwatchman Jamie Overton went.

Former England opener Trescothick remained unbeaten on 39, but with work to do to steady the ship on the second morning.
