Lexi leads the way in Alabama

Lexi Thompson fired a career-best nine under round of 63 to hold a two-stroke lead on day one of the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama.

Thompson opened her title defence on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex where last year she became the young champion in LPGA Tour history at the age of 16.

Having lost that honour to 15-year-old amateur Lydia Ko last month, Thompson grabbed the headlines on the opening day in Alabama.

Thompson had nine birdies in her bogey-free round on the links-style Senator course, missing only one green in regulation.

Lizette Salas and Hee Young Park shot 65, while there were 66s for Stacy Lewis, Karen Stupples, Amanda Blumenhert, Wendy Ward and Mi Hyang Lee.

Yani Tseng and Michelle Wie were eight strokes behind after they both scored 71.
