Ligety takes giant-slalom title

Ted Ligety claimed the overall World Cup giant-slalom title on Saturday after winning his fifth race of the season in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.

The American, who also won World Championship gold in Schladming last month, held onto his first run lead to finish in a total time of 2:35.43, almost half a second ahead of nearest rival Marcel Hirscher of Austria.

Ligety's win leaves him with an insurmountable 125-point lead over Hirscher in the overall giant-slalom standings with one race of the season remaining.

Alexis Pinturault of France finished third after being overhauled by Hirscher on the second run, while Germany's Felix Neureuther, who started the second run in the bronze medal position, slipped to fourth.
