Limato wins Newbury Rose Bowl

Limato maintained his unbeaten record with a battling victory over Cotai Glory in Newbury's Rose Bowl Stakes (sponsored by Compton Beauchamp Estates) and earned a tilt at York's Gimcrack.

Henry Candy's gelding, an 11/8 chance, had won both his previous low-key starts on the Polytrack at Kempton but took the class rise in his stride.

Cotai Glory made the first move but James Doyle remained relaxed and pushed Limato into a comfortable length and a quarter advantage.

Candy said: "I thought James was enormously confident. He said he was so green going down, he'd only had two starts under the lights at Kempton and had a good look around.

"I think we'll go to the Gimcrack. If he'd won easily today we might just have been tempted to look at going to Goodwood, but he's had to work a little and so we'll give him a little break and wait for York.

"He's always been a horse I have thought a lot of but he needed the education today and that's what he got."
