Lucas faces two months out
Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is expected to be sidelined for up to two months after sustaining a knee ligament injury.
Lucas suffered the problem just 20 minutes from coming on in the second half in Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa following a challenge with Fabian Delph.
It is understood that the 27-year-old Brazilian has damaged the ligament in his right knee and now faces a significant spell on the sidelines.
The news comes as a blow to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers as he looks to guide the Anfield outfit back into the UEFA Champions League with a top four finish in the Premier League.
Rodgers has been using Steven Gerrard in a more defensive midfield role recently and is confident it is a position his captain can operate in.
"It's something Steven and I have spoken about for a while," Rodgers told the Liverpool Echo after the 5-3 victory over Stoke.
"I thought he did very well in that role at Stoke. The mix of his game was excellent.
"It's a special type of player who can play that position. Lucas Leiva has played there outstandingly well for us, Joe Allen has played it well and I think Steven Gerrard can play it because of his personality."
