Marquez on form in Italy

Marc Marquez's bid to maintain his 100% record in the MotoGP season got off to a good start as he topped the timesheets in practice at Mugello.

World champion Marquez (Repsol Honda), victorious in all five rounds so far and from pole position on each occasion, led the way in the morning with a time of one minute 48.004 seconds, the Spaniard finishing 0.382secs ahead of Italy's second-placed Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP).

Andrea Iannone (Pramac Racing) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) made it three Italians in the FP1 top five, which was completed by Spain's Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP).

Due to the damp conditions, just four men went out in the second session, with Ducati's test rider and wild card this weekend Michele Pirro top and only Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar), Alvaro Bautista (Honda Gresini) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar) joining him on a relatively meaningless afternoon timesheet.

If it rains again for FP3, the faster times from FP1 will dictate Q1 and Q2 participation.

Bautista and Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech3) both escaped without serious injuries from big turn one crashes in the early session.

Marquez currently leads the overall standings by 42 points from compatriot Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), who was 11th on Friday. Rossi is third, two points behind Pedrosa.
