Martin leads Pirates past Cards
Russell Martin's three-run homer highlighted a seven-run outburst as National League Central leaders Pittsburgh Pirates beat St Louis 7-1.
AJ Burnett, who pitched seven innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, started things off with an RBI single in the second, with Jose Tabata also driving one in.
Martin then blew the game open with his three-run shot in a five-run third, helping the Pirates pull a game clear of the Cards.
Jake Peavy dominated his former team-mates over seven strong innings as the Boston Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2.
Peavy, acquired by Boston in a three-team trade in July, allowed two runs on five hits, fanning four and walking one, as the Red Sox padded their lead at the top of the American League East.
Jacoby Ellsbury, who scored twice and drove in a run on three hits, was one of seven Red Sox with multi-hit games.
The win put Boston 4 1/2 games clear of the Tampa Bay Rays, who lost 2-1 to the Oakland Athletics and their rookie pitcher Sonny Gray.
Gray threw 6 2/3 shut-out frames, striking out seven, while Coco Crisp provided the offence, driving in both runs on three hits, including a solo homer in the eighth.
Ivan Nova pitched his first career shut-out to lead the the New York Yankees to a 2-0 win over Baltimore and ahead of the Orioles in the standings.
Scott Feldman with a homer and Robinson Cano with an RBI double provided the offence.
BJ Upton hit a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th as the Atlanta Braves walked off with their sixth straight win, 5-4 over the Miami Marlins.
It was a fourth hit of the night for Upton, who also launched a game-tying homer in the sixth.
The Texas Rangers also had a walk-off win, as Leonys Martin's ninth-inning bases-loaded single saw them beat the Minnesota Twins 2-1.
Omar Infante belted two home runs to lead the Detroit offence as the Tigers claimed a 10-5 win over the Cleveland Indians, who got an inside-the-park home run from Carlos Santana.
Starlin Castro's go ahead homer in the sixth handed the Chicago Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Hank Conger's pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2, the New York Mets were 11-3 winners over the Washington Nationals and the Seattle Mariners overcame the Houston Astros 3-1.
There were also wins for the Cincinnati Reds, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
