Sri Lanka have named all-rounder Angelo Mathews as their Twenty20 captain, following Mahela Jayawardene stepping down from the post.
Jayawardene stepped down after the World Twenty20 final loss to the West Indies.
Mathews was the vice-captain under Jayawardene and has been given the task for the next year, while fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been named vice skipper for that same period.
Jayawardene quitting the post was not a shock, given that he only took over in January in a 'caretaker' role and said he would hand over the armband when a younger player was ready to lead.
Sri Lanka chief selector Ashantha de Mel said: "We are giving Mathews a free hand to captain the T20 side for one year, after which we will review his performance."
Mathews will take charge for the T20 against New Zealand at Pallekele on October 30.
