Mathieu through to round two

Paul-Henri Mathieu reached the second round of the Open Sud de France dominating Nicolas Mahut before his fellow Frenchman retired injured.

Wild card Mathieu saved a break point in an eight-minute opening game and followed up by breaking Mahut in his first two service games to storm into a 5-0 lead, winning the set 6-1.

Two more breaks in the second set made it 6-1 3-0 before Mahut, ranked almost 100 places higher than Mathieu at 47 in the world, threw in the towel.

Marc Gicquel, Marsel Ilhan, Albano Olivetti and Andres Artunedo Martinavarr won in qualifying to reach the main draw.
