Mayhew extends Falcons stay

Newcastle back-row forward Richard Mayhew has signed a two-year contract extension with the Falcons.

The 28-year-old, who has made 50 appearances for the Kingston Park club since his arrival ahead of the 2011/12 campaign, is the fifth player to commit his future to the club in the last fortnight, following Gonzalo Tiesi, Matt Thompson, Scott MacLeod and Sinoti Sinoti.

"I've really enjoyed my time in the North East since joining the club a few years ago, and there is a great set-up here at Kingston Park," said Auckland-born Mayhew.

"We have a good core of players at the moment with a mixture of both youth and experience, and I'm delighted to have committed my future to the club."

Newcastle director of rugby Dean Richards said: "Richard is one of the ultimate professionals in the game, and has been in impressive form this season.

"He has excellent leadership skills too, both on and off the pitch which is invaluable at this level, and he is another excellent re-signing for the club as we continue to build for the future."
