McIlroy finds form in Memphis

Rory McIlroy is among the leaders at the St Jude Classic in Memphis after a two-under-par opening round of 68.

The world number two has been out of sorts of late and has missed his last three cuts but looks set for a better week after enjoying a good day with the putter at the TPC Southwind on Thursday.

McIlroy only hit nine greens in regulation but holed a pair of nice par putts and rolled in birdie putts of 16 and 10 feet.

Having started at the 10th, he reached three-under for the day with a birdie at the sixth, his 15th, but then dropped a shot two holes later.

His round of 68 was equalled by Padraig Harrington but a birdie at his final hole was the only bright spot on the day for Graeme McDowell, who shot a five-over-par 75.

Jeff Maggert set the early pace with a four-under-par round of 66 and he was joined later in the day by his fellow American John Merrick, who actually reached five-under but then bogeyed the last.

There were rounds of 67 from Arjun Atwal, Jeff Overton and JJ Henry.
