McKenzie beaten in Rio
Ashley McKenzie endured a disappointing day at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro as he lost to Yanislav Gerchev in the first round.
The European bronze medalist from London stayed in touch with Bulgaria's Under-23 European Champion in the -60kg category until, at one yuko down, he was thrown while pushing on with only 12 seconds left.
The referee initially gave ippon but it was downgraded to another yuko and McKenzie could not make headway in the remaining time.
Colin Oates, who took seventh place at London Olympics, takes to the tatami in the -66kg category on Tuesday.
