McRae frustrated by postponement

Hull director of rugby Shaun McRae was left frustrated after his team's Super League match against Catalan Dragons fell victim to the weather.

Referee Phil Bentham and match commissioner Gerry Kershaw called off the contest after a cold spell in the south of France left an area of the pitch unsafe and unsuitable for use.

The request to inspect the pitch this afternoon was at the request of Dragons head coach Trent Robinson, who had seen conditions worsen since a pitch inspection by Bentham and his counterparts had deemed the pitch playable yesterday afternoon.

McRae said: "There is a great disappointment from a lot of people right now, none more so than the players. They have gone through a rigorous preparation.

"This is not an easy trip, we left our training ground shortly before 6am on Thursday to catch the plane over here and travelled for just under 12 hours before we got to the hotel.

"We had a good training session yesterday and were told we weren't allowed to train on the field as has been the case in previous years, but we understood that and went to a different ground.

"We were never told there was an issue with the ground whatsoever, we were just told that we couldn't train on it. We were also told that Catalan weren't training on there as well.

"Does that spark a bit of a concern? Maybe not, maybe it should have, it didn't for us because we knew that the London Broncos had played here, we knew that Wakefield had played here in pre-season so there was no reason whatsoever to suggest it was an unplayable surface or part of the ground was unplayable."

McRae is not relishing a return trip, adding: "Having the game called off also puts us under enormous pressure to have to come back here sometime later in the year.

"Both sides were wanting to play somewhere but ultimately this was a decision taken by the RFL, the match commissioner and the referee - and let me say for the record, that I absolutely endorse that. It was totally unplayable, there is part of the ground that I would call unsafe.

"My question to everybody is why [was the decision taken at] 2pm on matchday? We have been here now for at least two full days and then we get a phone call.

"To be fair to Trent, at about 1pm he called and said 'Sean, I'm going to the ground, I have some concerns'.

"I appreciate that, but if you have concerns at 1pm on matchday, why weren't those concerns there the day before or two days before or the day before that? Why weren't these issues sorted out earlier? It's really frustrating."

He added: "I'm not a horticulturist, but looking at the pitch, it's not only the frozen water. There is a patch of it that's like a rock.

"You couldn't play in that area, and you couldn't cordon or segment it off and say that area is out of bounds.

"It seems like it has been a waste of four days. I'd imagine the RFL probably need to look into it. I'm not telling them how to do their business, but we're extremely disappointed and that is probably an understatement."

Robinson said: "It's not good to have a game called off at any time, obviously when the Catalans are involved, whether it is us in England or Hull down here, it's involves travel for supporters, players and the club.

"It's obvious that it's not ideal and it's frustrating, but obviously the conditions won't allow us to play and we have to respect that.

"Over here, we've had two games of top 14 (Rugby Union's top league in France) cancelled, we've had a Marseille (football) game cancelled so it's not a one-off occasion in France to have a game like this cancelled, it's because of the ice on the pitch."
