Clay-court expert Medina Garrigues cruised a 6-2 6-4 win over Russian opponent Nina Bratchikova.
The Spaniard will play Luxembourg's Mandy Minella in round two after the world number 91 beat another Russian, Alexandra Panova, 6-3 7-6 (10/8) in a match lasting just over two hours.
Belgian fourth seed Yanina Wickmayer fell 6-4 6-2 to Patricia Mayr-Achleitner of Austria, but sixth seed Chanelle Scheepers and Romanian pair Irina-Camelia Begu and Alexandra Cadantu all safely progressed.
