Meehan eyes Newmarket treble
Brian Meehan will attempt to win the TBA Houghton Conditions Stakes for the third time in five years with Spark Plug at Newmarket on Wednesday.
The Manton handler struck in 2009 with Champagne Style and 12 months later with Mantoba, who went on to run at the Breeders' Cup, and Spark Plug is one of two unbeaten runners in the five-strong field.
A son of Dylan Thomas, Meehan is slightly concerned about soft ground at Headquarters.
"Spark Plug is a nice horse, he looked very good when he won at Bath and we like him a lot," said Meehan.
"It was first time out (at Bath) and he was in front for a long way and ran green. The form has since been franked. My one worry would be the likely soft ground - we are not sure if he will act on it."
Richard Hannon's Newbury winner Cape Wrath is the other unbeaten juvenile in the field, Peter Chapple-Hyam's Noble Metal drops in class having been highly tried since winning on his debut while the Peter Charalambous-trained Kalon Brama steps up in class having won at Wolverhampton.
The only maiden in the field is Godolphin's Sudden Wonder who was second to his Charlie Appleby stablemate Pinzolo, subsequently supplemented for the Racing Post Trophy, back in August.
