Mel upbeat despite loss

West Brom boss Pepe Mel was upbeat despite seeing his side go down 1-0 at Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Olivier Giroud's goal after just 14 minutes was enough for the Gunners to claim the points, with West Brom's defending from the set-piece leaving a lot to be desired.

Mel admitted he was annoyed to have conceded from a corner.

"My team gave a good performance. We worked very hard and were compact," he told Sky Sports.

"But we made one mistake and it was disappointing to concede from a corner."

Mel admits he would have liked to have gained the point which would have secured their top-flight status.

"We needed an extra point and today it was possible," he added. "Arsenal are a big team, top-four and gave us a tough match but we played well and deserved a point.

"We just couldn't get the goal we needed, now we are focused on Sunderland."

Mel insists his players have worked so hard in recent weeks that they deserve to stay up.

"The players are good professionals and every day we work hard and enjoy things," he added.
