Mellon slams transfer target

Micky Mellon has blasted an unnamed transfer target for pulling out of a proposed move to Shrewsbury after pledging to join the club.

The Town boss reported over the weekend that he was close to completing a 17th summer signing but that deal has now collapsed since Saturday's season-opening 2-2 draw at AFC Wimbledon.

"We got a call this morning (Monday) that said the player had changed his mind," Mellon told the club's official website. "The club was fantastic all the way through and they kept their word certainly, but the disappointing thing is that players do that at times.

"If it was the other way around and we'd done that to a player this morning, then I'd have been disappointed as the manager of the club. We move on and get on with business.

"There's no absolute target where I'm desperate to go and do this or do that. For the whole duration that I'll ever be here, I'll look to try and improve it. If I feel that someone we've been watching becomes available, we'll do all we can to bring them in.

"They'll have to fit in with what we want to do and our structure but I'll never stop, probably only when the transfer window shuts. If you want to improve a football club then you've got to keep improving the playing staff, and one of the ways is by bringing new players in."
