Mijhaar leads Cup contenders

Ante-post favourite Mijhaar features among a maximum field of 20 runners in the 53rd John Smith's Cup at York on Saturday.

Roger Varian's four-year-old has run two fine races in defeat this season, finishing third over a mile on the Knavesmire before occupying the same position behind the fast-improving Gatewood in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot.

The market-leader has interestingly been declared with a hood for the first time as Varian aims to help his charge settle better in his races.

Mijhaar's price could well contract further after his main market rival, Danadana, was not declared for the lucrative contest by Luca Cumani.

However, the Italian trainer does still have a leading contender in Kirthill.

Hajras was short in the betting, but has failed to make the cut.

Local trainer Richard Fahey saddles Area Fifty One, with Royal Ascot winner Prince Of Johanne, Elaine Burke's Media Hype and the Mark Johnston-trained Licence To Till other interesting participants.

Oceanway and Las Verglas Star are the two reserves.
