Mitchell quits as Sale boss

Sale Sharks have confirmed that coach John Mitchell has left the club and returned to South Africa for personal reasons.

Speculation had grown about Mitchell's future with the Aviva Premiership's bottom side after their 33-27 win over Worcester on Friday night.

Mitchell had only recently agreed to take over until the end of the season after a short spell in a consultancy role.

His arrival did little to change their fortunes, with Friday's victory their first in the league since the first weekend of November - they were also humiliated 62-0 by Toulon in the Heineken Cup two weeks ago.

A statement from Sharks owner Brian Kennedy read: "John was brought in on a consultancy basis with a view to the possibility of being employed in a longer term position within Sale Sharks. He has had to return to South Africa for personal reasons which we respect.

"We are grateful for his valuable and insightful contributions albeit for a shorter term than envisaged.

"Steve Diamond, Bryan Redpath and Pete Anglesea will continue to coach the side, implementing many of John's ideas, and building on Friday night's excellent performance."
