Mixed start for England duo

England stars Sam Tomkins and Gareth Widdop enjoyed contrasting fortunes on debut for their new clubs in the first round of the NRL on Sunday.

Tomkins, who moved from Wigan to New Zealand Warriors for a world record 700,000 fee in the winter, had a hand in two of his side's tries but was on the end of a 36-16 defeat by Parramatta in Sydney.

"He was a bit nervous but it's tough for a full-back when those in front of him are not playing how we practised in pre-season," said Warriors coach Matthew Elliott.

Widdop, conversley, enjoyed a dream debut for St George Illawarra, inspiring the Dragons to a 44-24 win over Wests Tigers, for whom former Wigan winger Pat Richards was a tryscorer on his return to the club.

Widdop, who left Melbourne in the close season, had a hand in four of his side's seven tries and kicked eight goals from as many attempts.
