MLB: Drew downs Red Sox
Stephen Drew came back to haunt his former team the Boston Red Sox by inspiring the New York Yankees to an 8-7 comeback victory at Fenway Park.
Drew, who was traded to the Yankees by the Red Sox last week, drove in four runs as the Yankees recovered from 7-4 down to win by a single run, which came courtesy of a Brett Gardner homer in the sixth inning.
The result means the Yankees win their three-game mini-series 2-1 against their fierce rivals after losing the first game.
The St Louis Cardinals also came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory against NL Central leaders the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Brewers were leading 2-0 after Ryan Braun scored in the first inning and Mark Reynolds homered in the second, but three runs in the seventh inning - a Matt Holliday home run and further scores from Matt Adams and Jhonny Peralta - ensured the Cardinals also clinched a 2-1 series victory having lost the first encounter.
Pitcher Madison Bumgarner conceded just two hits as the San Francisco Giants beat the New York Mets 9-0 at Citi Field to avenge their 4-2 defeat 24 hours earlier.
With Bumgarner on fine form, the Giants' batters were free to take the attack to the hosts and home runs from Hunter Pence (two), Brandon Belt and Buster Posey helped to wrap up a convincing victory.
The free-scoring effort meant the Giants notched 16 runs and conceded just five in their 2-1 series victory over the Mets.
There were also plenty of runs at US Cellular Field as the Chicago White Sox hosted the third and final game of their series against the Minnesota Twins.
Unfortunately for the home fans, the majority of the runs were scored by the Twins who were in free-scoring form as they claimed a 16-3 victory and a subsequent 2-1 series win.
The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, however, with 12 of the Twins' runs coming in the final two innings - including nine in the eighth.
Elsewhere, a Nick Markakis home run in the first inning was enough to guide AL East leaders the Baltimore Orioles to a 1-0 win against the Seattle Mariners, while AL Central top side the Detroit Tigers were 4-0 winners over the Colorado Rockies thanks to Victor Martinez's second three-run homer in as many games.
NL East leaders the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-0 with Nats pitchers Stephen Strasburg and Cole Hamels allowing just three hits between them, while AL West leaders the Oakland Athletics and NL West leaders the Los Angeles Dodgers were beaten by the Kansas City Royals (4-2) and the Chicago Cubs (7-3) respectively.
Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians were 4-3 winners against the Texas Rangers, the Los Angeles Angels beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-5 and the Houston Astros defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1.
The Cincinnati Reds earned a 7-3 victory over the Miami Marlins, the Arizona Diamondbacks were 3-2 victors against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres edged the Atlanta Braves 4-3.
