MLB: Eight straight for Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays continued their red-hot form with a 6-4 win over defending World Series champions the Boston Red Sox at Tropicana Field.

Evan Longoria's three-run double in the seventh inning helped Tampa Bay overcome a 3-2 deficit to earn their eight successive victory.

The Rays still remain in fourth spot in the American League West but closed the cap on the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost 6-4 to divisional rivals the New York Yankees.

Toronto led 3-0 after the first innings but the Yankees, helped by Ichiro Suzuki's three-run homer - his first home run in almost a year, recovered to take the spoils at Yankee Stadium.

That was the Yankees' fourth win on the trot and saw them move a game clear of Toronto in the standings while also taking sole possession of the second AL Wild Card spot.

The leading team in the AL West, the Baltimore Orioles, defeated the Seattle Mariners 2-1 with Chris Davis' 10th-inning homer proving key.

It was a bad night for many of the other divisional leaders though, with Detroit, Oakland, Milwaukee and San Francisco all losing.

In the AL, Central pacesetters the Tigers were beaten 2-1 by the Los Angeles Angels, while the Athletics, who lead the way in the West, crashed to a 4-1 loss against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park.

In the National League, the West's top team the San Francisco Giants suffered a second successive loss after being thrashed 8-1 by nearest rivals the LA Dodgers, while Central leaders the Brewers lost 3-2 to the New York Mets.

That meant the only other top side to record a victory aside from Baltimore was the Washington Nationals, who inflicted a seventh straight loss on the Cincinnati Reds in a 4-1 victory.

The Nationals, who have won five of their last six games, now boast a 2 1/2 games lead over the Atlanta Braves, who were beaten 5-2 by the San Diego Padres at Turner Field.

Elsewhere, the Kansas City Royals made it four victories out of four with a 6-4 triumph over the Cleveland Indians, the Miami Marlins defeated the Houston Astros 2-0, while Colorado were convincing 8-1 victors over Pittsburgh thanks to a seven-run seventh inning.

Also, the Chicago Cubs squeezed past the St Louis Cardinals 7-6, the White Sox saw off the Minnesota Twins 9-5 while Philadelphia beat Arizona by the same scoreline.
