MLB: Shoemaker shines for LA

The Los Angeles Angels completed a fifth straight win despite the loss of pitcher Jered Weaver in a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Weaver left the game after two innings with a stiff back but replacement Matt Shoemaker gave up just two runs and a four-run fifth-inning helped the Angels condemn the Blue Jays to a fifth straight defeat.

In the American League East, Toronto now sit three games back of the Baltimore Orioles who beat the Washington Nationals 8-2 thanks to a six-run 11th inning.

Nelson Cruz's two-run homer was cancelled out by a similar effort from Anthony Rendon as the game went to the extra innings.

And once there, further two-run homers from Chris Davis and Manny Machado helped the Os to a third straight win.

The clash between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves also went to extra innings with Ruben Tejada's walk-off RBI securing a 4-3 win for the team from Queens.

James Shields registered 10 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings as the Kansas City Royals claimed a convincing 6-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Oakland Athletics won their fifth straight game with a 5-0 victory over near neighbours the San Francisco Giants as Alberto Callaspo hit a two-run double.

There were more shutouts around the league as the Chicago White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox 4-0, the St Louis Cardinals were 2-0 victors over the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Seattle Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins by the same score.

The Cincinnati Reds were 9-3 winners over the Chicago Cubs, the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 5-3 and the Houston Texans beat the Texas Rangers 12-7.

In the day's other games, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2, the San Diego Padres were 6-1 winners over the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks thumped the Miami Marlins 9-1.
