Monbeg misses Haydock date

Monbeg Dude was a surprise absentee from the 14 horses declared for the Betfred Grand National Trial at Haydock on Saturday.

Last season's Welsh National hero, trained by Michael Scudamore, had been expected to line-up ahead of his bid for the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree for which he is set to carry 10st 9lb.

Heading the weights for Saturday's three-mile-five-furlong handicap chase is the Donald McCain-trained Across The Bay.

McCain took his other entry, Sydney Paget, out of the race at the 48-hour final declaration stage.

Hawkes Point, runner-up to Mountainous in this season's Welsh National at Chepstow is set to take his chance for trainer Paul Nicholls while the Evan Williams-trained Wychwoods Brook goes for a second successive course victory after lifting the Peter Marsh Chase last month.

Our Father, one of David Pipe's Grand National hopes, reappears after finishing seventh in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in late November.

Completing the line-up are Well Refreshed, Merry King, Soll, Nuts N Bolts, Wellforth, Le Reve, Rigadin de Beauchene, Emperor's Choice, Loch Ba and Red Rocco.

The other withdrawals were last year's Scottish Grand National winner Godsmejudge and Burton Port.
