Monfils rallies to Kubot win
Former ATP Open Sud de France champion Gael Monfils was made to work hard for a three-set victory against Lukasz Kubot to reach the second round.
The fifth seed saved six of the seven points break points he faced as he battled past his Polish opponent to come through 6-4 4-6 6-3 in Montpellier on Wednesday.
The right-hander, who is chasing his fifth ATP World Tour title and first since 2011, will next face Joao Sousa after the Portuguese player came back from a set down to beat Tobias Kamke 3-6 6-1 6-4.
Elsewhere, Nikolay Davydenko upset eighth seed Julien Benneteau 7-6 (6) 7-5 and seventh-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin beat Poland's Michal Przysiezny 7-6 (7-3) 6-3.
Sixth seed Jarkko Nieminen advanced over Aleksandr Nedovyesov when the Ukranian was forced to retire with a shoulder injury with the score locked at 4-6 6-2 4-4 while Germany's Dustin Brown overcame Teimuraz Gabashvili from Russia 4-6 6-1 7-6 (1).
