Monfils sees off Bemelmans

Gael Monfils moved into the second round of the Open Sud de France in Montpellier after a 7-5 6-4 victory over Ruben Bemelmans.

The Frenchman, who is trying to work his way back up the rankings after an injury-ravaged 2012, completed the win in one hour and 27 minutes.

Monfils served 10 aces during the clash and saved all three break points he faced, while he broke his Belgian opponent's serve twice.

Fellow Frenchman Benoit Paire needed just 45 minutes to claim a 6-0 6-2 victory over Adrian Menendez-Maceiras of Spain.

Paire sent down nine aces and did not face a break point, with his opponent winning just 19 points on serve in the whole match. The eighth seed will next face Steve Darcis, who beat Adrian mannarino 6-4 7-6 (7-0).

Elsewhere on Tuesday there were wins for Jarkko Nieminen, Victor Hanescu and Jan Hajek.
