Montanes sets up Monfils date

Gael Monfils has an opportunity to avenge his defeat in last year's Open de Nice Cote d'Azur after Albert Montanes joined him in round two.

The Parisian suffered a shock loss to reigning champion Montanes last May and, after the latter beat Matthew Ebden of Australia 6-1 6-3 here on Monday, Monfils was given the chance to make amends.

Fifth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov enjoyed a 6-1 6-4 first-round victory over Aleksandr Nedovyesov and will next meet either Filippo Volandri or Robin Haase.

Nicolas Mahut needed three sets to get the better of fellow Frenchman Martin Vaisse. His 6-7 (4/7) 6-3 6-2 win sends the world number 38 into a meeting with either Julian Benneteau or Carlos Berlocq.

Qualifier Leonardo Mayer will next tackle eighth seed Edouard Roger-Vasselin after sending Borna Coric back to Croatia on the back of a 4-6 6-3 6-4 defeat.

Elsewhere, Paul-Henri Mathieu fought back against fellow Frenchman Lucas Pouille to win 2-6 6-4 6-0, booking a showdown with Argentina's Federico Delbonis, the seventh seed.
