Albert Montanes was the big-name casualty on the first day of the Brasil Open in Sao Paulo.
The number seven seed was beaten in straight sets, 6-2 6-3, by Italian Filippo Volandri - his first win of the season.
Also in the first round, Frederico Gil - a semi-finalist at the event three years ago - was knocked out 6-2 6-4 by wild card Javier Marti, and Ricardo Mello beat Pere Riba 6-4 6-2.
Elsewhere, there were qualifying wins for Jeremy Chardy, Paul Capdeville, Igor Andreev and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.
