Monty: We'll go down fighting
Monty Panesar has promised England will fight to avoid an Ashes whitewash as he prepares to replace Graeme Swann at the MCG.
The role of England's senior spinner will fall to Panesar following Swann's abrupt retirement three Tests into the five-match series.
The tourists have suffered heavy defeats in all three of those games, surrendering the Ashes in just 14 days of cricket, and go to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test with just pride to play for.
"We've still got two Test matches to show our hunger, our determination, and the style of cricket that we want to play," Panesar said.
"Come Boxing Day we obviously want to put in a very good performance and try to show some fighting character.
"We're hungry and determined in the dressing-room to make the most of these two Test matches."
Panesar, recalled for the Ashes tour after a summer of personal problems, knows he has the opportunity to nail down a regular place now "icon" Swann is out of the picture.
He said: "When these opportunities come my way I've got to grab them.
"I know my strengths as a bowler and I have to try and make the most of the opportunity, be ready for it and enjoy it like I do."
