Ronnie Moore set his sights on next season after a 1-1 draw against Scunthorpe in a final-day League One clash with little at stake.
Mark McChrystal headed Tranmere in front from an Andy Robinson corner before having to leave the field due to injury.
But Scunthorpe levelled with an excellent finish by Garry Thompson from 12 yards after Rovers had failed to clear a corner, ensuring it finished all square at Prenton Park.
Manager Moore said: "It was a good a good entertaining match for the end of the season. We had one or two decent chances to add to our tally but we gave away a bad goal.
"It is pleasing to finish in the top half of the table considering the position we were in when I came here. Naturally I would like to have concluded with a win but Scunthorpe looked a good side and produced some neat and tidy passing."
Moore added: "The hard work starts now for next season. I have got some difficult decisions to make as to who goes and who stays. I have got to shake things up and we must develop some of our own players. We need more power up front. It is a key area to fill."
