More Wentworth misery for Monty

Colin Montgomerie followed his highest-ever score at Wentworth with an even worse one, hitting 81 in the final round of the BMW Championship.

At 14 over par the only man to win the title three times was in last place of those who survived the halfway cut.

Montgomerie, who is involved at Walton Heath tomorrow in a 36-hole US Open qualifying tournament, was one under for the day after eight holes, but then came a triple-bogey seven on the next and a back-nine 44 containing five bogeys and a double bogey at the 383-yard 16th.

With his 49th birthday coming up next month, the former Ryder Cup captain, whose seventh-placed finish in the event last year was his only top 10 since 2008, is now set to fall outside the world's top 400.

Before this week his highest round over the West Course was 76.
