Mowbray proud of his players
Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray has paid tribute to his players for grinding out a victory over Wolves in the wake of their Capital One Cup exit.
Just three days after seeing their cup dreams dissolve in unfortunate circumstances at Swansea, Boro, aided by the return of England defender Jonathan Woodgate, scrapped their way to a 2-0 Championship win over Wolves which maintained their promotion push.
Mowbray told the Evening Gazette: "It was a game I was concerned about. We didn't get back to the training ground until 6pm on Thursday and due to the weather, were weren't able to train.
"Therefore it was a performance anybody connected to the club should be proud of.
"We weren't slick, we didn't pass the ball as well as we can and even the subs who came on looked a bit leggy, so for us to keep a clean sheet was fantastic, and I can't find the adjectives to say how great Woody and Seb Hines were.
"I'm so pleased and proud of them. Woody coming back into the side made a big difference for us."
Mowbray reserved special praise for Marvin Emnes for leaving his sickbed to help Boro to victory.
The Dutchman came off the bench to convert a controversial late penalty and then set up Scott McDonald to seal the three points which helped Boro close the gap on Championship top two Cardiff and Crystal Palace.
Mowbray later revealed that the 24-year-old had been sent home from training the previous day, but was determined to be involved.
He told the Evening Gazette: "Marvin's been under the weather for the last couple of weeks and on Friday, he was sent home ill suffering from sickness and diarrhoea.
"But he phoned me personally on Saturday morning to say he'd had a good night's sleep and had been able to take on some fluids into his body and wanted to sit on the bench, and that's great credit to him."
