MVG claims Dubai double
Michael van Gerwen successfully retained his Dubai Masters title with an 11-7 victory over Peter Wright in the final.
The champion 12 months ago only just scraped past James Wade in Thursday's semi-finals, but was a little bit more comfortable on Friday as he saw off two-time world champion Adrian Lewis 11-7 in the last four before repeating that result in the final.
'Snakebite' Wright defeated Dave Chisnall 11-8 in his semi-final to set up a clash between the two men, who have had their run-ins during the recent Premier League darts.
Wright had some of his trademark checkouts early in the match, finishing off a 138 and a 121 in the first eight legs, but that was only enough to keep him level at 4-4 such was van Gerwen's scoring.
And when the world champion started to nail his doubles, he won four on the spin to open up an 8-4 gap - and one which he maintained until the end.
Van Gerwen hit nine 180s en route to claiming the $50,000 first prize and retain the trophy he claimed last year in the inaugural event in the World Series of Darts.
"This is a very special win for me," said van Gerwen. "This is the first time I've won a major title twice in a row and it's absolutely fantastic.
"To win this great trophy again is huge and it means a lot to win again in this country means a lot because it's one of the nicest places in the world.
"I've worked so hard for this for the past two days. I thought I was the better player throughout the final but I made it difficult for myself at times - but I got the win and that's all that mattered.
"It was a tough game against James Wade on Thursday and it was the same again when I played Adrian and Peter, and I think I was the best player in the tournament.
"Peter hit a couple of good finishes in the final to keep himself in the final, but it doesn't matter how you win and I've got the trophy in my hands. I think I showed my class in this tournament and I'm very proud of myself.
"This is a great tournament, the crowd is fantastic and the venue is great. To win this is a great feeling for me."
