Nargys puts rivals to sword
Nargys was an impressive winner of the Group 3 Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster under a confident Andrea Atzeni ride.
The daughter of Lawman had finished just behind Just The Judge in the Rockfel Stakes last season but had been unplaced on her four starts this term.
Despite those form figures, she was sent off an 8/1 chance and fully appreciated the softer surface to score by one-and-three-quarter lengths.
Tony Hamilton attempted to make the running under Switcher and the proven soft ground performer gave a bold sight at the front but the race was to begin in earnest as the well-supported Maureen was ridden to challenge for the lead.
Winning Express attempted to deliver her challenge to the far side as Zurigha stook to the rail but Nargys was travelling particularly well and while not quickening immediately, she began to accelerate quickly inside the final furlong and soon put the issue beyond doubt.
"It was very comfortable," said Atzeni.
"She travelled really good and she loves the ground. She has always been a nice filly but a few things hadn't gone right. I probably got there a bit soon but she won."
