Newcastle forced to inspect

Newcastle's meeting on Friday is in serious doubt and faces an inspection at 8am on Thursday morning.

The going is currently heavy with waterlogged patches and the forecast offers little hope of respite.

Clerk of the course James Armstrong said: "We had three millimteres overnight and that was about as much as we could take.

"It would have been borderline whether we raced today or not, but from 1.30pm today we've had further heavy rain, about another three to four millimetres.

"We'll just have to see what comes overnight but the forecast then for Thursday night into Friday is not good, either.

"It's hard to be confident."
