Northamptonshire's hopes of putting Hampshire's batsmen under pressure were dashed as the second day of their Championship game was washed out.
Heavy overnight rain meant the outfield was sodden and, after two pitch inspections, umpires Martin Bodenham and Nigel Llong decided to abandon the day at 3.30pm.
Hampshire will look to bat themselves out of a precarious position when they resume on 42 for three with their stand-in captain and Australia international Simon Katich unbeaten on four and opener Liam Dawson on 14 not out.
They still trail Northants by 176 runs and the hosts will be hoping to bowl the visitors out cheaply having been skittled for 218 yesterday.
