Durham had no cause for celebration on the 20th anniversary of their first-class debut as they neared towards a likely loss to Nottinghamshire.
There were two wickets standing when Nottinghamshire claimed the extra half hour at 7pm and 10 balls later Phil Mustard's defiant innings of 80 ended.
But the last pair held out and Durham closed on 203 for nine, still 164 behind in this LV= County Championship contest.
Mustard was well caught low down at point by James Taylor to give Andre Adams his fourth wicket, but with sleet falling at the end Graham Onions and Mitch Claydon rode their luck.
As in their opening Championship win against Worcestershire, the visitors recovered impressively from what looked a below par first innings total to take a stranglehold through Michael Lumb's impressive 131.
A devastating burst from Adams had Durham rocking on 30 for five, but Mustard quickly drove Ben Phillips for six on his way to a 56-ball half-century.
Nottinghamshire lost their last six wickets for 46 after lunch, but it became nine wickets in the session as Durham began their pursuit of 368 to win by slipping to 21 for three.
When Adams then produced a beauty to beat Ben Stokes' forward push and trim the off stump the 36-year-old Kiwi had figures of three for seven.
Nottinghamshire's battery of five seamers kept up the pressure and Paul Franks picked up a wicket when Ian Blackwell scooped a catch to leg.
There was also one for Samit Patel when Callum Thorp danced down the track and was stumped.
When Durham launched their first-class life at the Parks, Oxford, on April 14, 1992, they began with a double century opening stand. It was of little benefit, and nor was the fact that last Sunday they dismissed Durham University for 18.
Five of them took the field wearing woolly hats today after the start was delayed for an hour following rain and the bowling carried little threat as Nottinghamshire added 51 without loss.
Lumb had moved on from his overnight 104 to 127 at lunch with Chris Read on 27. But on the resumption Onions swung one through Read's straight drive to take out middle stump then Lumb departed when he sliced a drive at Thorp to cover.
Mitch Claydon took the last four wickets, despite Adams carving him through the off side for two fours then driving a straight six in making 22 off 11 balls.
Franks clipped a catch to backward square leg, Adams was bowled and the last two were caught behind as Nottinghamshire were all out for 335.
But that was only the cue for Adams and Nottinghamshire to bowl their way to a likely win on the final day.
