Oates takes gold medal
Great Britain's Colin Oates took gold in the -66kg category on the opening day of the Judo European Open in Glasgow.
Taking place at the Emirates Arena, a prominent venue for next year's Commonwealth Games, Oates beat Beglium's Jasper Lafevere to take the crown after the London 2012 Olympic quarter-finalist scored an ippon in the closing stages.
The 30-year-old was pleased with his display in what he considered to be a tough field.
"It is important to win tournaments," he said.
"I've been winning matches and winning medals, getting to finals and bronze medal matches and winning a tournament is a big thing.
"It was quite a strong group out there today and to actually win a tournament is a tough thing to do, so that's why it was really important to me."
The two other British athletes on show on day one had to settle for seventh-placed finishes with Nathon Burns and Patrick Dawson competing in the -66kg and -73kg categories respectively.
