Ogier off to winning start

Sebastian Ogier made a winning start to the defence of his World Rally Championship at the Monte Carlo Rally.

A mixture of torrential downpours, heavy snowfall and mist ensured the opening race of the season would test every competitor to the limits.

Several drivers, including former Formula One driver Robert Kubica, failed to complete the rally but consistency was the key for Ogier in his Volkswagen as he recovered from a poor opening day to finish with a one minute 18.9 second advantage over his rivals.

Three stage wins on Friday had turned things in Ogier's favour, placing him ahead of fellow Frenchman Bryan Bouffier, who paid the price for a heavy spin in his M-sport Ford.

British driver Kris Meeke completed the top three in his Citroen.
