Peter Hanson and Martin Kaymer were given the entire day off at the Ryder Cup as Europe tried to claw back their deficit in Chicago.
The pair sat out the first morning of the match and then lost in the fourballs, Hanson with Paul Lawrie and Kaymer with Justin Rose.
Captain Jose Maria Olazabal also rested 2010 match-winner Graeme McDowell and his most experienced cup player Lee Westwood, while Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley were given a break by Davis Love after winning their first three games and Tiger Woods - left out for the first time in his Ryder or Presidents Cup career - came back alongside Steve Stricker.
"We want to make sure we are rested," Mickelson said. "We don't want to risk two points (in the singles) for one (in the fourballs)."
Ian Poulter, winner of his first two games, became the new partner for world number one Rory McIlroy.
Draw for the second day fourballs in the Ryder Cup on Saturday (all times BST, US names first):
1805 Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar v Nicolas Colsaerts and Paul Lawrie
1820 Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson v Justin Rose and Francesco Molinari
1835 Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker v Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald
1850 Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson v Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter
