Oxford see off rivals Cambridge

Oxford went ahead in the Rugby League Varsity March series with a 40-0 victory at the Honourable Artillery Company in central London.

The victory equals Cambridge's record of five successive wins in the 1990s.

The Dark Blues, who now lead the series 17-16, were in control from the start and, despite losing Ben Claxton for a spell in the sin bin for a shoulder charge, were 18-0 ahead at the break thanks to tries from Oakley Cox, George Sismey-Durrant and Marcus-Alexander Neil, all converted by Jake Whittaker.

There was more steel in the Cambridge tackling after the interval and for the first 20 minutes the game developed into a midfield battle, but going into the final quarter Oxford ran in further tries through Cox, Neil and Joe Davies, who touched down twice.

Whittaker was awarded the Bob Mahuta Trophy as man of the match.
