Panthers extend lead at top

Nottingham Panthers moved further clear at the top of the Elite League standings after seeing off arch rivals Sheffield Steelers 3-2.

Nottingham looked comfortably on course for a fifth successive win after powerplay goals from David Clarke and Jason Beckett put them 2-0 up in the first period, but Sheffield battled back to level through Jeff Legue and Danny Meyers to send the game to overtime.

Neither team could find a breakthrough in the extra session but the Panthers claimed the extra point when Eric Werner scored the decisive goal in the seventh round of the shootout.

In tonight's other match third-placed Cardiff Devils slumped to a 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Coventry Blaze, for whom Dustin Cameron netted a brace.
