Patel posts superb score

Samit Patel posted 156 as visitors Nottinghamshire asserted control on the second day of their County Championship clash with Sussex at Hove.

Patel had hit an unbeaten 142 on Sunday's opening day and although he could only add 14 to his overnight total before he was caught by Ed Joyce off Matthew Hobden, it was enough to secure his side a commanding total.

If anything, the visitors may have hoped for more having ended day one on 408 for five and adding 44 for the last five wickets before they were finally bowled out for 452.

Chris Read departed in the first over of the second day having failed to add to his overnight total of 61, caught Matt Prior off Steve Magoffin who ended with creditable bowling figures of four for 110.

But Sussex hopes of making inroads into such a daunting run-chase were hit by the fourth over departure of opener Luke Wells when he was caught by Phil Jaques off Stuart Broad for one.

When Rory Hamilton-Brown departed lbw to Broad for six, Sussex slipped to 27 for two and when opener Chris Nash's innings came to an end on 41 when he was caught Patel off Andre Adams, leaving the hosts on 75 for three, things looked bleak.

While Sussex's plight was eased considerably by an unbeaten 104 from Joyce, he found himself short of able assistants with only a 30 from Prior helping to maintain the mini-revival.

For all Joyce's heroic efforts, Sussex had laboured to 270 for eight at close, still a full 182 runs behind the visitors.
