Peng clinches Nanchang title

China's Peng Shuai was pushed all the way by youthful compatriot Liu Fangzhou as she won the inaugural International Women's Open 6-2 3-6 6-3 in Nanchang.

Liu, 18, belied her pre-tournament world ranking of 422 to reach the final, dropping a single set on the way, but appeared to have run out of steam after a one-sided opening set went Peng's way.

But a vastly improved display in the second set saw Liu fire four aces and stave off three break points to deservedly level the contest against the world number 50.

Liu carried the momentum into the third set, forcing two break points in the first game of the decider only to see Peng, who has been as high as 14 in the world rankings, hang on.

And the more experienced player held her nerve to apply the crucial pressure when leading 4-3, forcing Liu into mistakes which gave the 28-year-old the opportunity to break and then hold serve for victory.
